On Monday, I crossed the Big Muddy and traveled up to the Mississippi Delta, to that stretch of Land known as Parchman, it's up past Yazoo City, Ms. farther past RuleVille, Ms. up to the wind-swept abandoned cotton fields. To a Land that is known as MSP, the Mississippi State Penitentiary. According to the locals, it's 22,000 acres, statistically it says it's 18,000 acres. Land of old men, in striped uniforms, whose families have long passed away.
I walked 3 miles inside the compounds the first day, 6.1 miles the next day, and concluded my inspections with 3.0 miles before 11:30am on the last day, yesterday. Total of 12 miles, in three days, came home worn out; it's a 278-mile drive one way.
I do have time to think and compose my thoughts, as sometimes the toll is not on my body, but on my mind.
Somehow, not sure how, but the sunsets across those fields are some of the prettiest I've seen in a long time. There is a Quiet that I can not place in words, as I stand outside any of the Gates of those units.
I am glad to be home. I roll out again to cross the Big Muddy in another 11 days. to return to those wind-swept fields.
